Adventures in diapering.

Cloth diapers. I've heard the stories from other moms that they were a nightmare. Of course, these are the moms of my friends talking of cloth diapers 30 years ago. Now I've heard stories from friends with babies now. They say how easy it is. They say the cloth diapers can work just like disposables. They say it really isn't much laundry, especially after those first few newborn months.

Well, R is 2.5 months old now. She weighs 15 pounds. I bought her first pack of size 3 diapers at Costco last week for a whopping $45. She goes through a box in about 3 weeks time. So I did some math. I could buy a supply of nice cloth diapers for around the cost of 6 months of disposable diapers. She's likely to be in diapers at least triple that amount of time, if not longer.

But I'm intimidated by the pictures and the "diapering systems" when I look online. What do you do with all those snaps? What do you mean I have to stuff a pocket? How hard is this going to be?

Lucky for me, we have an actual store in town that is just for cloth diapering. So yesterday I went. I spent an hour or so looking at the different styles of diapers and trying various brands on R. I left with one cloth diaper. The store gives me a 2 week trial of it and if I don't like it, I can return it (clean, of course) for a full refund.

We'll see.

  1. I, too, was intimidated. I've asked lots of questions. I've gotten several dozen diapers. We're outgrowing them. I'd be happy to pass them on to Ruthie if you're interested. They've been wonderful. Email or call me if you are even slightly interested and I can give you specifics like type and condition.
